The 1990s

The 1990s saw major international and national events. The First Gulf War began the involvement of the U.S. in Iraq and nearby countries. The Soviet Union collapsed. The first school massacre took place in Columbine, Colorado, and acts of domestic terrorism took place in Oklahoma City and at the Atlanta Olympics. Computers slowly became more common in homes.

Literacy Volunteers faced ongoing challenges:

  • Workers who needed to learn computers
  • More people who needed help learning English as another language
  • Students with developmental delays
