The September 2001 attack on the World Trade Center began the new era of the “War on Terrorism.” Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast. “Big box” stores like Wal-Mart and online shopping for music (iTunes) began changing how we shop. We elected the first African-American president, and Nancy Pelosi became the first female Speaker of the House.
Literacy Volunteers of America became ProLiteracy Worldwide, and affiliates became self-directed. Literacy Volunteers of Bangor became completely independent organization with a clearer mission and its own logo.
Mary Marin Lyon became Executive Director, and student enrollments reached a new high by the end of the decade.
