Volunteer Stories

Shelby Hartin

“LVB is special because the people behind it understand that our paths to success are almost never linear. Neither is learning English. Stumbling, flailing, and quitting only to stand back up and dust ourselves off, ready to try again—that’s what defines the learning experience this organization offers.”

Shelby Hartin

“I care deeply about the organization and the service it provides to others. Those I volunteer with help me continue to believe that people are inherently good and kind and true. I stepped away from LVB for a time, but as soon as I was ready to reengage, the LVB team welcomed me back as if no time had passed. The real measure of an organization and the people who lead it is the way they act when someone who has left wants to return.”

Gianna Marrs

Pondering what to do in retirement after a career at UMaine, Gianna Marrs realized she wasn’t ready for her new rocking chair. A TV ad for Literacy Volunteers clicked with her. She took the training and began tutoring a new U.S. citizen

Ten years later, she’s even more involved, supporting other tutors and serving on our board. Why? As she says, ”Literacy is a key building block. Literacy opens real possibilities. A better job? A driver’s license? The enjoyment of reading to children and grandchildren? A sense of self-worth and a growth in confidence?”

Today, she says, “My calendar is more filled up than I might have anticipated ten years ago but the involvement enriches my life.  My rocking chair is patient. It will wait for me.”

Kris Currier

Kris is one of dozens of volunteers who doesn’t tutor but works behind the scenes.

Kris Currier

For over ten years Kris has been the genius behind our radio ads and many of our marketing materials. She also served a record four years as president of the Board of Directors.

Kris says, “The importance of being of service was instilled in me at an early age. I love using my communications skills to help promote LVB in our community so future students know there is hope out there. Knowing we are helping adults enhance their literacy skills so they can live more prosperous lives does my heart good.”
